Narrogin Hosts Champions
The Australian Vintage
Motocross Championships were successfully held over the weekend of the 15th
and 16th of July at Dandaloo
Park motocross circuit,
Narrogin. Along with visiting international and national riders, Narrogin had its
own local riders competing. Frank Baron and son Terry were amongst 120 riders
who enjoying racing on the challenging Dandaloo Park
circuit. It is one of the biggest crowds I have ever seen at the track, Frank
said. The local supporters of this event would have to be happy about that.
The support from local businesses and council had been fantastic and went a
long way to ensuring the event was a success.
The Vintage Motocross Club of WA,
who have Dandaloo
Park as their home track,
invested a lot of time and money to run the event and to attract International
competitors. 2 times world 500cc Motocross Champion, Jeff Smith, along with
works CCM rider Jimmy Aird accepted invitations to come to Perth and race, a fairly expensive exercise
for the club. This event was the culmination of a hard years work by our
dedicated committee and everything went off without a hitch said club
president Peter Lawson. Were happy with the support from the local businesses
for this event and are happy to maintain our base at the Narrogin track for
many years to come.
Jeff Smith, 65, won the World
500cc Motocross Championship in 1964 and 1965, and was a member of the winning
Motocross Des Nations or Trophee Des Nations team no less than 11 times and
also competed in Trials winning many British titles in the 50s and 60s. Jeff
has never stopped racing and is currently a very active Vintage MX, Trials and
Hare Scrambles rider winning many events and three USA AHRMA Championship in
2000. He has now added the Australian over 60yrs Championship to his trophy
collection. Jeff Smith rode a BSA 500cc Goldstar and 500cc BSA B50 over the weekend. The Goldie
is about 100 pounds too heavy these days Jeff said. But it is a hell of a lot
of fun.
In addition to Jeff, well
known Scottish MX Champion, World Vintage MX Champion and Factory CCM racing
legend Jimmy Aird travelled from England with his own mechanic to show the
locals how to ride a vintage four stroke. Jimmy won the over 50yrs Championship
as well as coming 3rd in the pre75 Open Championship. The USA was
represented by 1970s AMA pro rider Bill Davis who had a ball.
This event also celebrated
the 40th anniversary of the Narrogin Motocross Club and the timing
of the event marks exactly 40 years to the inaugural Motocross meeting at that
track.
The track remains almost identical to the original layout and machine
eligibility rules ensure that the bikes raced over the weekend were near to
being exactly as they were 40 years ago. All of the famous marques from a
bygone era were there including Triumph, BSA, CZ, Husqvarna, OSSA, Bultaco and
all of the popular and not-so popular Japanese brands. |
