According to Captain Pete, Beverley bode ill for Greeves and other bikes without scuba gear.
(Live by the sword, die by the sword)
Arriving at the track at about 7am a few hardy overnight campers were just pulling back their Winnebago curtains to reveal a glorious morning. The pits area had been groomed to perfection and looked like a Persian carpet. And it was great to see our President Peter (Buck) Lawson fresh from his Yankee trip, must admit though the Stetson he was wearing didnt quite look right and those Buffalo horns on the bus?? Each to his own.
Some 40 riders were practicing by 9.30 with racing commencing by 10am. An executive decision by Mr Suzuki Hyland was made to take the second corner out as it closely resembled Lake Joondalup, this certainly was a good decision as this was the biggest of the three lakes to choose from. Yes the pits area was deceitful, the recent rains we have been having have turned some areas into a sloppy quagmire. I suppose it beats riding in the dust though! Apart from the mosquitoes liking the damp surroundings some riders thrived on the slippery conditions.
One particular rider who certainly hasnt lost the touch was Peter Lawson (senior) who showed how a holeshot should be done. But sadly some of us and their bikes didnt like the wet and well I have to, live by the sword, die by the sword, as the old saying goes. Haven taken my ever faithful Greeves Griffons x 2 and my BSA B25 by lunch time I didnt have one bike to ride. I just couldnt understand it you know, most people associate Greeves with performance and reliability but for some reason they just wouldnt go, there must be something in that Beverley water you know.
Luckily I wasnt the only one having a bad day as many a rider ended up pushing their loved ones back to the pits. The track had been altered since last year with two frame cracking jumps thrown into the mix and the track seemed to get fairly choppy by lunch. We also experimented with capacity racing with a fairly mixed response. A graders felt it lacked competition and the mere mortal B graders loved it because they could follow an A grader for ½ a lap. It would be nice to get some feed back from riders what they thought of the capacity classes and should we run it in the future? And how did the 4 lap format go down?
Another great day had by all but one rider on a Greeves and unfortunately I havent any photos to prove the fact, I think Bert Greeves was looking down from heaven and pressed the delete button!
PS Dont forget our next race meet is at the legendary Manjimup Motocross Track, plenty of people are threatening to stay over, could get a little messy!
