Collie April 2014

The Vintage Motocross Club of WA (VMXWA) had their second meeting of the year last Sunday at the Collie Motocross’ Stockton Park track. The track was in perfect condition for the pre-75 bikes and the rain on Saturday just added to the conditioning.

Many riders arrived at the track Saturday afternoon to check out the swap meet and get missing parts at bargain prices. There was also a few complete outfits up for sale.

Saturday night saw members socialising with a bbq catered for by the Collie Motocross Club. Riders were keen to catch up and talk bikes and their hopes for the rest of the season.

Sunday morning saw a threat of rain that didn’t eventuate and a total of 39 riders sign on for a day of racing.

The format of racing was A Grade, Over 55’s, B Grade, C Grade and the feature race – European bikes. Numbers were good in the practice and early rounds but at one point Fred Dillon rolled out to the line for a C Grade race and found only himself on the line – normally C Grade is one of the most populated – so he figured he’d scared the competition off and joined the European feature guys and then had to retire after losing the chain on his bike.

The battle out the front of A Grade was fought out between Rick Speak, Lewis White and Brian Watson. In the Over 55’s Alan Mitchell dominated the day but was challenged by Mick Rudd and Greg Speak. In B/C Grade George Bilich dominated the racing being chased closely by Mike Jemmett, Mick Godbold and Hayes Forsyth.

The final round of the European Feature saw Ralph Miller on his Husqvarna lead the first lap only to stall on the last corner and have to retire. Rick Speak went on to win the race easily on his Bultaco from George Bilich, on his Maico, and Costa Lindgren, on his CCM. Frank Barron carried the CZ team through to fourth position.

The final five lap All-in saw 13 bikes head to the line. As the A graders fought to work their way up through the pack Mike Jemmett managed to hold the lead for the first couple of laps followed by Fred Dillon. Then positions started to change and the final result saw the win go to Ralph Miller from Brian Watson and Rick Speak.

Special thanks to Steve and Alison Melvin for their work in making this meet happen for the club.

The next meeting will see the club head to their home track , Dandaloo Park, in Narrogin on Sunday 18th May.
