Dandaloo Park July 2014

Top Vintage Motocross Action at Dandaloo Park Narrogin July 13, 2014

The Vintage Motocross Club returned to the home circuit at Narrogin for their July 13 race day and members were greeted with cool winds, sunshine and a beautifully graded racetrack.

This day was to be a special one for the Narrogin community as it had been designated as the Club’s 2014 Charity Day, with the Narrogin Freemason’s taking the chance to hold a lunch time sausage sizzle and to keep all monies raised, for distribution to local people in need. In addition the Club donated a portion of the day’s riding fees to this great cause. The canteen was certainly flat out with hot dogs and cool drinks racing out of the building as fast as the A Grade solo class. Most guys had one in each hand and the lucky ones had another hot dog in their back pocket. Good use was made of the club’s tables and chairs set out in the spectator area by the start line and there was lots of bike talk and race stories being exchanged during the lunch break. By the end of the lunch interval President Gary was very proud to hand over a total of $780 to the Narrogin Freemasons for their distribution. The smiles on everyone’s faces told the story. Well done VMXWA!

Well what about the racing. Sunday morning started off with the sweet sounds of 2 stroke and 4 stroke vintage motocross bikes being warmed up for the start of another exciting day of racing.

The capacity racing is proving to be very popular, with 48 entries and about 60 bikes in the pits. Good sized fields faced the starter in every class and some awesome battles were witnessed throughout the day.

The 125 cc curtain raiser saw an exciting battle between Warren Patterson #78 and Ralph Miller #311 who swapped the lead several times, lap after lap before Ralph took the chequered flag just ahead of Warren, followed closely by Paul Gibbs and Hayes Forsythe. Ron Chandler and Stuart Aldred followed them home in 5th and 6th. It was all Warren Patterson on the 125 Elsinore for the rest of the day, with Paul Gibbs and Hayes Forsythe keeping him honest and making him earn every win.

The 250cc class was dominated by Brooke Lawson, who we haven’t seen in action for some time. Brooke has lost none of his class or his pace and he was an exciting rider to watch on the 250 Yamaha. Brooke took out all 4 of the 250 cc races with Rick Speak, Lew White, Gary Johnson, Ian Brown Mike Gordon and Mick Godbold, sharing positions 2-4 all day. These guys were battling one another race after race and certainly put on a top show.

When it was the big boys’ turn to play, the 251 cc and over bikes came to the line. Scott Lawson #11 and Paul Gibbs #173 shared line honours with 2 wins apiece and these 2 guys had to work hard all day to stay in front of one another and also to fend off strong challenges from Mike Lawrie #47 and Russell George #888. Robert Dillon, Fred Dillon, Gary Johnson, David Jones and Will Plummer kept popping up during the day, keeping the fields honest.

The Golden oldies (Over ‘55’s) were in force once again, making this class the biggest on many occasions. With riders of the calibre of Derek George, Steve Hanson, Stan Read, Frank Barron, John Howell and Alan Mitchell it was fireworks from start to finish. No one told these guys that they were over 55 and that most of their non motocross mates were at home watching telly or having an afternoon nap. I’m sure some of these boys are still as fast as they were 30 years ago. The day’s honours went to Derek George #688 (3 race wins) and Alan Mitchell #69 (1 race win).

The sidecar class was literally a swingers party with riders, passengers and bikes swapping around for each race. 5 outfits turned up on the day, but unfortunately a couple of them developed engine gremlins in the pits overnight on the Saturday and didn’t want to run on Sunday morning. Andrew Irving and Russell George on the #51 machine were the boys to beat this weekend and we also saw Sarah and Fred Dillon take a win on Gary Johnson’s “red terror” #25, and then Dave Christie/ Paul Gibbs took it out for a spin in race 2. Not to be outdone, the same bike had Dave Christie/ Robert Dillon on board in race 3 and finally Fred took the bars and won the final handicap with big brother Robert swinging.

It was great to see one of our sidecar stars from the 1970’s in the pits. Jack and Marg McDonnell often travel over from Wagin when they know the sidecars are racing at Narrogin and they stopped in for a look. I think Jack secretly still wants to throw a leg over one of the Norton Wasps and cut loose for a few laps, he was legendary on his own Norton and usually lead the big fields back in the day.

Staying with tradition, the final race was an all in solo handicap which was run over 5 laps. Trevor Lobegegere on the #70 machine lead the big field out of turn 1 and up the hill. He was followed by Fred Dillon (now on #77). Lap 2 it was Fred Dillon who had worked his way to the front, but lap 3 saw another leader #11 (one of our new members on Scott’s 250 Elsinore). Brooke Lawson had worked his way up to second spot by the start of lap 4 but his handicap had been severe and the gap between him and the leader was still a long way. At the start of the last lap it was still #11, Brooke, with Rick Speak on #14 moving up to 3rd and looking for some of the pie. He was followed by Ian Brown #96, Paul Gibbs, #173 and Russell George on #888. The pace was a cracker but there was no catching that elusive Elsinore and the final result did not change on the last lap.

And so ended another day in the life of VMX WA with lots of happy faces, a few broken bikes, but no broken bones.

Machines were washed and loaded, the last of the hot dogs were discovered and devoured and everyone headed for home to get those bikes and bodies ready for the next event.

Next meeting is this Sunday 27 July, again at Dandaloo Park, Narrogin. The feature race for this meeting is pre-70 solo machines. This will be the final shakedown for the Annual Mill Farm Scramble at Wandering next month as well as the National Titles in South Australia, where a large and strong contingent of WA competitors will be headed. Free spectator entry, everyone is welcome.

Boddington June 2014

VMX WA race meeting at Boddington 22nd June

Vintage Moto cross Riders had their first outing at the Boddington circuit last year and the venue proved to be a very popular one, despite one section which was very dusty until the local volunteer Fire Brigade turned up and sprayed some wet stuff on the dry stuff to solve that problem.

This year was a completely different story as the weather had turned wet during the week lead up to the event and steady rain all day Saturday left us all keen to see the difference in the track surface from 2013 to 2014.

Sunday morning dawned with the air very crisp and fresh – but no rain. There were lots of smiles around the pits and the overnight campers were steadily joined by more and more cars, uts and trailers full of bikes, that had decided to arrive on the Sunday. The start to the day cold seemed to slow down the sign on and scrutineering process as nobody seemed to be moving too fast until the sun came out and set the scene for a great day of VMX.

The solo riders took to the track for 2 practice sessions and found that the surface was very slippery and would certainly test the riders throughout the day. For a change, many were hoping that the sidecars would dig the track out a bit to provide some traction on the corners. However the sidecar riders and their passengers also found the slippery conditions and bit challenging, particularly some of the off cambered corners where the bike was on full lock in one direction and the outfit was still sliding in the other direction. They loved it.

A Grade saw a range of different riders competing for line honours including Scott Lawson and Jason Depiazzi who were consistent throughout the day.
Others that were noted at the pointy end of the field were Rod Gilchrist, Brian Watson, rider #154 (Phil Cross) and Rick Speak.
B Grade saw Ian Brown on the #96 Maico having a great day in the leading pack with Ralph Miller and Mick Godbold providing some tough competition for him.
C Grade had a large field of machines with Trevor Rivers on #120 and David Jones riding well throughout the day.

The sidecars put on a great show with a few more machines on the track and a couple of spares sitting in the pits for sale. Any takers? Luke and Claire Boston were out on their new 850 Yamaha Wasp (ex Steve Povey and ex Colin Cook). Garry Johnson and Jason Depiazzi were on fire all day, using the meeting as a practice run for the Nationals. Sarah and Robert Dillon were also showing flying colours, Sarah obviously making up for the meetings she had missed to study for exams. The final handicap race for the sidecars saw all the chairs finishing in a fairly close bunch. Fred Dillon with passenger for the day, Adam Fanderlinden were first to set off and Adam did everything possible to stay in front of Dad and brother Ryan on the Fanderlinden #26 , but finally succumbed on the last lap to give the win to the Fanderlinden pair, with Fred & Adam second and Sarah & Robert third.

The All In handicap race for the solos resulted in a very close race with the A-grade riders just starting to catch the other riders over the last two laps. The winner was relatively new rider Jayden, who is just 16 and managed to hold on to the top position from Jason Depiazzi, who chased him right down to the last corner of the last lap and finished close behind. Ralph Miller, Rick Speak and Brian Watson completed the top five across the line.

The track conditions were totally different to last year and all of the riders loved the chance to get out and ride. Many thanks to Kingsley and his family for allowing us to ride on their property and for their involvement in always making the Boddington meets successful.

The next meeting will be held at the Narrogin track on Sunday 13th July and is a charity event for a local Narrogin group.

Narrogin May 2014

It was new beginnings for some people who attend the May 18th Vintage Moto Cross (VMXWA) race meeting at Dandaloo Park Narrogin, along with 47 riders families and friends.

I’ll start the race report with comments from a few folk I chatted with in the pits on the day, then finish off with some race results.

Let’s begin with Ted Smeschkal who has made a welcome return to Dandaloo Park after a 15 year break. Ted has ridden with the Trial & Enduro club of WA since its beginnings and he spent some time in the north west of WA. Ted has built up a lovely KTM 250 and a SPH Sachs (couldn’t remember what the ‘P’ stood for) in a Honda frame, with support from Macca.

He continued to race in all grades except for ‘A’, at last count his wife said he’d completed 8 races. That’s a comeback. I caught up Ted later and asked how his day was going and his reply was “Perfect”.

Rebecca Watson was down from Shark Bay with her partner and enjoyed the day with her 4 legged Red Kelpie and her 2 wheeled Husky family. While on the subject of Watsons, it was superb to hear from Bill & Mary that the Goldfields Motor Cycle Club had recently put on an excellent 100 year club celebration. Well done Goldfields, let’s hope VMXWA is still going strong in 2095.

Relative new comer Ralph Miller ex Brisbane, now Perth was on board a 74 400 Husqvarna. Ralph has been riding on and off since the age of 16, he told me he had just ran out of having plain fun and now is back. Ted likes how the tracks are prepped for the bikes of this era and how the club members are very helpful and friendly. As an added bonus, the VMXWA club also has found another photographer in Ralph’s wife Debra, who has shared her talents across social media. As with Ted, I watched Ralph peddling the 400 out in A Grade and it was superb to see him doing well at the pointy end of the field and see him having found that fun factor again; while he chased Gary Johnson on fullnoise.

The newest kid on the block is Bianka Berry from Wandering. Bianka is more used to riding the hills and paddocks on a four wheeler with the Dan Fergusson family offspring. Bianka enjoyed watching VMX at Wandering and thought that since the guys are having a go, then she may as well too. On a lovely tidy 125 Honda Elsinore, Bianka enjoyed her first event and won’t be going up to a 250 in a rush. She did ask the guys how to get good starts and of course they told her to “give it more throttle”, forgetting to mention that one needs to sit and lean forward more. So Bianka did a stylish lady flip on the start and unfortunately retired for the rest of the day with a broken clutch perch. We all hope you come back soon Bianka and if you need any good female advice ask the “veteran” lady young Asry Bizar.

The 2014 National Championships (Port Augusta in August) were discussed and all eyes are on Asry for a women’s podium. She was flying around the Dandaloo Park track on Sunday and enjoying the differences of a Maico and a Husqvarna on this unscheduled test day. Asry has been brought up riding the heavier four stroke bikes which has kept her in good stead for the lighter bikes come National Titles day.

It was also nice to see a few local spectators from Narrogin starting to build mid-morning, along with a group of interested road racing sidecar competitors. We were privileged to have the company of Dot Squire and several family members/friends of Pete #59 and Dot Squire. Two of Pete’s wishes were to have his ashes spread at Dandaloo Park and to have Dot riding on a sidecar outfit. During a break in the race program, President Gary wheeled out an outfit and Dot climbed aboard, fully dressed in Motocross gear, boots and all. A guard of honour lined the start straight with Dot in the chair, doing the last two laps with Pete and spreading his ashes around the Dandaloo circuit; a fitting farewell amongst loved ones. RIP Pete and all the very best in your new journey’s Dot.

Race Report

With practice running on time the second group consisted mainly of Japanese bikes, with one Montesa, a Maico and a BSA. Kawasakis are low in numbers these days and didn’t have any representation in the solo ranks – anyone keen for green?

Riders were out to get some fine tuning of bike and body for the upcoming Dandaloo Classic two day meeting on the June long weekend.

High rider numbers turned up in the over 55 years group, with 14 on the start line. It was great to see Graham Taylor back on his CCM wearing a bright Bultaco jersey, being easy on the eye to watch from the spectator fence.

Eleven riders in C grade saw some fierce battles through the field.

The sidecar class saw 6 machines in their field, with a few familiar faces back to play in the dirt. Good to see the return of MB Racing’s brothers Ken and Steven Melvin who were running a strong third position until passenger Steven’s knee gave way. However Hayes Forsythe stepped into the swinger role for the rest of the day and the pair took first place in the staggered start in the last round. This last race also saw a couple of different teams taking to the track and having a grand old time to finish off the day.

Sarah/Robert Dillon on the Kawasaki rocket ship H2 750 or was that a H1 500??? were on fire and wouldn’t let those Fanderlinden’s in for a top placing and took the lead after the first lap. Back in fine form after a year’s absence, the Dangerous Dillon Sidecar pair have now taken up sidecar road racing as an added extra. Younger sister Hanna had a close look at the track surface during the afternoon, as brother Jason decided to step off the sidecar on the last turn and let Hanna take control on her own, leaving her with a sore head.

The solo ‘all in’ consisted of up to 10 riders contesting a 5 lap journey. After a hard fought battle, Ralph Miller took 1st, Russell George on the hard to start Husqvarna 2nd,3rd place went to Jayden(sponsored rider)Barron,4th Brian Watson. Giving Brian a G up was Lew White 5th on his Maico and Jason Dillon bringing home 6th. Superb racing by these riders. Place your bets for the Dandaloo Classic June long weekend, on these guys.

Cheers for now. Alison Melvin
